Perlite Filter Aid Principles. A filter aid is an agent consisting of solid particles that improves filtering efficiency by building up a porous, permeable and rigid lattice structure—the filter cake—that retains solid particles and also helps flow control. The septum serves principally as a support for the filter cake.
Filter aids should be added at 500 to 1200 g/m² (10 – 25 lbs/100ft²) of filter area. The precoat is formed by recirculating the filter aid slurry through the filter. The coarser particles deposit themselves first on the screen followed by smaller ones. A precoating rate of 40 L/m²/min. (1 GPM/ft²) is normal.

Perlite is not a trade name but a generic term for naturally occurring siliceous rock. The distinguishing feature which sets perlite apart from other volcanic glasses is that when heated to a suitable point in its softening range, it expands from (4 : 20) times its original volume. This expansion is due to the presence of (2 – 6 )% combined water in the crude …

Precoat and bodyfeed are two related applications. Both of these special applications use diatomaceous earth (commonly known as D.E.), cellulose, perlite or fly ash, as a filtering aid when the solids in a slurry are extremely fine and free-filtering. The filter aid helps to trap the fine solids that otherwise might flow through the filter cloths.
Pretreatment of suspensions. E.S. Tarleton, R.J. Wakeman, in Solid/Liquid Separation, 2007 3.6.8 Addition of filter aid. Filter aids can improve the permeability and sometimes porosity of a filter cake, improve filtrate clarity and help to prevent filter medium blinding. They comprise relatively porous particles such as diatomite, perlite and activated carbon …
Expanded perlite has been widely tested as an animal feed supplement, proving that it is beneficial for animal digestion and breeding performance (i.e. weight gain, fattening period), for hogs [2], broilers and clucks [3]–[7] and fish [8].In fact, spent filter aid issuing from the wine and beer industry contains valuable polyphenols, proteins and other substances …

Cellulose is used as filter aid to a lesser degree than diatomaceous earth and perlite. This is due to its higher cost and lower filtration efficiency. There are some advantages to the use of cellulosic filter aid versus diatomite or perlite. Cellulose is combustible and is useful in the recovery of valuble metals.
Both precoat filter systems are capable of removing solid particle sizes greater than one (1) micron. Diatomaceous Earth (DE) and Perlite are the most common filter aid materials used for precoat filters. Diatomaceous Earth is an inexpensive natural mineral with honeycomb structure that is ideal for filtering. It is an industrial mineral ...

Step 2: Start precoat pump to bed until bed level is 30 cm upon drum end wall.
Cellulose also is compatible with hot caustic solutions unlike DE and perlite. Each type of filter aid comes in different grades that vary in particle size, which typically ranges from 5µm to 100µm. As particle size decreases, the ability to capture fine solids increases, thus the filtrate clarity improves. However, smaller size raises cake ...
